So will the Pittsburgh Steelers token jobber B-squad, led by backup "Laundry" Jones, tee off on the hapless Browns yet again?

Or will the dwellers by the lake make a valiant stand and stave off 0-16 infamy. Or is the paint drying on the wall of the women's bathroom in Heinz Field in that dang subzero weather a more important concern????

It's NFL week 17 high drama! Stay tuned!!!

-Vikings making a run.
-Unlikely for Brady to repeat last year

Is this the year the purple people eaters win it all?

Anonymous Looking Glass December 31, 2017 10:47 AM

@2 Ben Cohen

For Vox, it'd be nice. More likely scenario is still the AFC winner, as it always feels like the NFC winner needs that ultra-rare Defense to win against the Cold Weather teams. Though, somehow, New England is rolling with the best Offense and worst Defense (by DVOA) right now.

Brady has taken a copy of Peyton's playbook.

Blogger YIH December 31, 2017 10:51 AM

@1 Unlike the Clowns, the Steelers do have something to play for, they beat the Clowns (who hasn't?) and the Patriots lose or tie the Steelers get home field through the playoffs. Even more interesting, both AFC wild cards spots are still open and four teams are vying for them.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan December 31, 2017 10:57 AM

The Vikes win it all the gimps of sports media will say that Bridgwater would have won it better and the Vikes had better trade Keenum, because social justice and meritocracy or something equally nonsensical.

And the battle cry of Packers fans world wide, "Wait till next year."

Anonymous The Original Arrogant Steelers Fan December 31, 2017 10:59 AM

@4

Further adding to the drama...! It will be finally decided if the Patriots will embarrass the Steelers this year at Foxboro or at Heinz Field!

Odds are, the embarrassment will happen in Foxboro, but hey it's the NFL, anything can happen!!!!

Stay tuned, folks!!!

Only if no one talks about it......

A perfect season which cannot be compromised by a post-season loss with the bonus chance for a two-fer next year.

I say man up and go for it

The school should simply disband the team and shut down the football program. In fact, they should have done so the instant the law suit was filed.

The 2017 Jets are on their way to being one of the best 5-11 teams in NFL history if not thee best. Only twice did they really get their asses kicked (Raiders 45-20 and Broncos 23-0) they were in every other game and they did some ass kicking of their own (34-21 over the Bills)

Blogger YIH December 31, 2017 1:34 PM

Speaking for football weakness: Ol' Vince McMahon is mulling over an XFL comeback.
He sees an opportunity, but I think he's going to find out the market for pro football has changed a lot since '01 - which even then was too late for an upstart new league (especially one with his name attached to it) to succeed.

Blogger Stilicho December 31, 2017 1:38 PM

@11 you sound like a Bills fan: our record isn't good, but we were in almost every game til the end. Meh, I'd rather have the wins no matter how ugly.

Browns: fire Jackson and the GM then draft every QB you can until you get lucky.

Blogger Stilicho December 31, 2017 1:50 PM

@12 the potential market is there (the one the NFL is losing more of every season). It really depends on how Vince goes after it. Old school football would be a welcome change, more USFL than XFL, but he could keep the name and some elements from his last attempt. If disrespecting the flag/American nation is a firing offense (without pay and a mandatory clause of every contract) for players, staff, and owners, he'll have an instant base to build on.

Blogger Stilicho December 31, 2017 1:51 PM

Or more AFL as the case may be

@Stilicho. ....Happened to catch some of the Bills loss to the Saints. That was brutal. Hope yer doing OK.

Blogger Nate December 31, 2017 1:57 PM

if I actually watch the Titans vs Jags today it will be the first NFL game I've watched since... damn... week 7? The playoffs are on the line and its a late state so I will probably try to watch and see if the Titans can figure out a way to make this season a failure after such a great start.

Blogger Nate December 31, 2017 1:58 PM

the XFL is a great idea... but he shouldn't make it hard on himself. Clay Travis is right. Stick it right in middle of the summer. a big EFF YOU to the most boring time on the sports calendar.

Anonymous Looking Glass December 31, 2017 2:01 PM

@13 Stilicho

Have to fire the owner. That's the problem with the Browns.

As for the XFL, Clay Travis had a really good article on it.
https://www.outkickthecoverage.com/bring-back-xfl-new-rules-play/

Honestly, I'd watch that. A much shorter season and slightly different rules let's you run all sorts of offenses. Also, the lack of the most absolute best talent means it's somewhere between College wildness and NFL professionalism.

Oh, and have a streaming deal that just runs the TV-stream Ads. Heck, call up Amazon and stream it on Twitch if that's what it takes.

Anonymous Looking Glass December 31, 2017 2:11 PM

Actually, the XFL should be approached as a Streaming-first play. Make the content really, really easy to get and find other monetization approaches beyond the classic "sell lots of air-time ads".

Oh, and fan-voting for "best TD celebration" and the like. App-based Fan Voting also provides a massive amount of content for the broadcast itself, along with interesting F2P mini-game approaches within the App itself.

Got a real barn burner going on in Philly. 0-0 at the half. Offensive juggernauts battling it out. Something has to give.

I don't think so, pro football, NASCAR, and yes, WWE itself is struggling to attract new fans. There was also the ''fake'' aspect that haunted the original XFL. There are now NFL teams in LA and (soon? eventually?) Las Vegas. TV's not going to be interested either - maybe YouTube streaming or WWE streaming.
Not even touching on CTE, there is the issue of injuries and their costs.

I see your point but no, that wouldn't work. Football on all levels has real problems with the heat in July-August. It could work on an ''all-indoor'' league obviously, but outdoor, no way, heat issues would get players hurt/sick.
Also if the revived XFL puts a team in Orlando again, weather would be a real problem, summer weather in the Orlando area sucks, 90°+(F), 90%+ humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms (which would delay/possibly cancel games) are almost daily.

In the 3rd now, still 0-0 looks like both teams gave up. I can see why the Eagles don't care, but I expected the Cowboys to at least try.

The approach is primarily destructive rather than creative. To an SJW, the status quo is actively oppressive therefore it must be reformed, controlled or abolished in a no-holds-barred culture war. re: at least try... Yes. Early on in the game the Jets were doing just that locked in a 7-3 tug of war with the defending champs however after a demoralizing 2nd quarter in Cold Foxboro and an inability for the offense to generate even forward progress in the third quarter it the Jets are looking like a team that has now -mailed it in - as they say.

Blogger YIH December 31, 2017 4:27 PM

Reading the Outkick the coverage article now.
1. Play the season from mid-June to late August. NO, see above.
2. Draft freshmen and sophomores from college football and offer them contracts to play in the XFL.
Would Vince have the balls to do it? Would there be government pressure to stop him?
Nate? Would you want the XFL drafting/signing away what could be the key players for the next 'Bama championship season?
3. Sign star quarterbacks like Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin III, Tim Tebow and Colin Kaepernick, if possible, who are out of the NFL now.
WAT?!?! Do I even have to explain why that is a bad idea?
4. Vince McMahon should own the entire league himself and name himself the commissioner.
OK, so it means it wouldn't be a 50-50 partnership between WWE.inc and NBC/Universal . Vince wanted to hedge his bets, he wanted a partner to absorb some risk and provide a broadcasting platform.
5. Double player salaries for teams that make the playoffs, triple player salaries for teams that win the overall championship.
WAT?!?! I know, sounds good at first, but think about it, all other pro leagues pay extra when teams/players make the postseason. Extra money is nice, but that's not the reason players/teams want the postseason. They want the ego gratification, they want to hold up the trophy and shout ''Disney World? No way, Mustang Ranch!!!''
6. Put eight teams in cities that don’t have NFL franchises now.
There are 32 NFL teams, personally, I think that might wind up being too many, but they've covered most of the major metro areas.
''My top suggestions for cities: Portland, San Diego, St. Louis, Albuquerque, Louisville, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Raleigh-Durham, Memphis, Orlando, Oakland, and Birmingham.'' All of those have been tried by other upstart leagues: WFL, USFL, Arena Football, World League, CFL expansion. And they didn't work.
7. Insist players stand for the national anthem.
Natch, moving right along...
8. Allow fans to call plays via an XFL social media app.
Oh dear, Twitch Plays Pokémon with real humans.
9. Embrace gambling. EPIC FAIL. Vegas doesn't allow a line to be posted on WWE why do you think they'd post betting lines on the XFL? The event needs to ''isolated'' from the wagering (in fact, where it's allowed, that is insisted upon). The reason the NFL can't (yes, I said it) be corrupted by gambling is they made it a point to isolate itself from it.
What is the most wagered event in the world? The Super Bowl. That's because it's generally assumed that someone trying to 'fix' the game would lose more money paying out to the people they need to 'fix' the game than they would need to recover in bets.

Not super impressed with your reasons.

1) You say that its not possible. I look and not that its already happening. and always has happened.

2) This is actually the smartest part of his idea. This is exactly what i would do. The point would be to build a league that would eventually directly compete with universities for the players. This would force the NCAA to allow schools to pay the players. This HAS to be part of it.

3) this is not a bad idea. this is a great idea. if Kap signed.. cameras would be everywhere. WILL HE STAND??? And cameras followed Tebow on the backwater minor league baseball circuit. they will damn sure follow him in the XFL.

i am not going to bother rebutting the rest.

Congratulations to the 2017 Browns! They made the NFL post-merger, 16 game regular season, record for an AFC perfect season. They stand with with the (NFC) for the worst ever.
At least they tried against the Steelers - even if they failed.

Professional wrestling has a long term history of being theatre and still drawing an audience. Going by my own response to the XFL, being like pro wrestling was one of the league's big problems. What I recall was Hulk Hogan giving commentary of the sort that would work for pro wrestling, and then of all things they had people out on the field talking to the defensive players right during the game. I like some of their innovations, and some of the camera work got copied by the NFL. But for whatever reason we want football to be a real athletic contest, and in the XFL it didn't seem to be.

Professional Rugby is coming to Houston, starting in Jan 6 2018. The games in 2018 are exhibition.
Was planning to go on Jan 6 but got a wedding invite ... at the polar opposite of Sugarland. Too far to try to make it.

I already spelled it out Nate, mid-summer is a bad time to play football outdoors. The only way a ''American Football'' league could work is either Spring or Fall.
3) this is not a bad idea. this is a great idea. if Kap signed.. cameras would be everywhere. WILL HE STAND???
He's a crap QB, a ''second tier'' league, will sign him, of course. And if they even do the ''salute the flag'' ceremony they can fire him.
And Tebow? WAT? He has been offered many many many chances to return to pro football.
No, Nate, like [Yes] Jimmy Carter, I don't doubt his faith, I doubt his ability. I don't doubt the faith of either Jimmy Carter or Tim Tebow, but faith can't overcome reality.

Tebow's ability to run a modern NFL passing attack is doubtful. His ability to command a team with a primarily run oriented attack is not.
